What is ISO 50001?
The primary objective of the ISO 50001 standard, “Energy Management Systems – Requirements and Guidelines for Use,” is to establish the key characteristics of an effective energy management system (EMS) that enables constant and continuous improvement and is also certifiable.
Using the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, improvements are immediately applicable and range from adopting measures to reduce and control energy consumption to verifying the savings achieved and planning ongoing improvement interventions.
Another important feature of ISO 50001:2018 is its scope of investigation, which is not limited to a single aspect but examines performance during both production and distribution throughout the entire supply chain. This means it can also be requested from suppliers, thus improving their own performance and, at the same time, establishing a truly virtuous and effective system.
The importance of certification, in addition to its impact on corporate image and the communication of reliable and verifiable data, concerns above all the improvement of energy efficiency and the achievable savings.
ISO 50001 offers organizations in any sector management strategies aimed at:
- increasing energy efficiency;
- reducing costs;
- improving energy performance, which must therefore be integrated into the management of the organization’s daily activities.
